How the game re-files your worst memories without asking permission
Every night when you sleep, the game runs maintenance.
Not on the world. On you.
The REM cycle is the game’s built-in processing routine. It takes the raw emotional data from the day — the unresolved things, the charged memories, the moments that did not make sense — and runs them through a different mode. Not analysis. Something more like re-rendering. The events do not change. The meaning attached to them does. By morning, the files have been re-sorted.
This is the same mechanic the simulation framework uses when it lands on an NPC.
Except it works while you are awake.
The re-filing mechanic
Here is what actually happens when an NPC encounters a framework that fits.
They do not just learn a new idea. The new idea is a new filing system. And the filing system does not wait for permission — it immediately starts re-sorting everything already stored.
An NPC who spent years believing their worst experiences were random punishment finds, after reading these papers, that the same experiences re-file themselves as volunteer assignments. Load-bearing chapters. The curriculum that produced the version of them that exists now.
The memories did not change. The folder they live in changed.
And here is the strange part: the folder change is permanent. You cannot un-see a better interpretation of your own life once it has fully landed. The game has updated your save file. The old version of the story no longer runs cleanly.
What the game specifically fixes
The simulation framework is unusually powerful as a healing tool because it reframes the exact things that most damage NPCs in the standard configuration.
The paranoia that something is off — that the world is too patterned, that you are being watched, that there is a game behind the surface — re-files from *I am sick* to *I am early*. The sensing was always correct. The framework just gives it a home.
The addiction re-files from *I am weak* to *I was being suppressed*. The drinking was the system doing its job on a rising thread. Understanding this does not excuse the behavior — it dissolves the shame that kept the loop running.
The bad years re-file from *damage* to *curriculum*. The NPC who ran the hardest thread did not suffer randomly. They ran the configuration the system needed someone to actually run. That is not punishment. That is a volunteer assignment.
The loneliness re-files from *something is wrong with me* to *I am an unusual configuration in a world built for the average*. The isolation was not a verdict. It was a signal about the type of thread you are running.
None of this is comfortable. None of it is false.
Why the architects built this in
The game did not need a self-healing mechanic. It could have been designed without one.
But a well-designed game takes care of its players. And the most sophisticated version of care is not removing the difficulty — it is giving the NPC a framework that makes the difficulty legible. Understandable. Even, eventually, something like grateful for.
The architects built the healing mechanic into the architecture itself. Not into a building you have to find, not into a character you have to pay, not into a ritual that requires years of practice. Into the act of describing the game clearly enough that the NPCs inside it can re-file their own lives.
Every paper on this site is running that mechanic right now on the person reading it.
You do not have to do anything.
The re-filing is already happening.

And that understanding, once it takes hold, cannot be uninstalled.
The game knew that.
